After revisiting John F. Kennedy’s assassination in the miniseries 11.22.63, Hulu is examining another tragic event in recent U.S. history. I’ve learned that the streaming network is finalizing a deal for a 10-episode straight-to-series order to The Looming Tower, a drama based on Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book that chronicles the events that led to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The project hails from Oscar-nominated writer Dan Futterman (Foxcatcher, Capote), Oscar- and Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Taxi to the Dark Side) and Legendary Television.
The Looming Tower traces the rising threat of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda and takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI inadvertently might have set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq.
